Hawzah News Agency (Tehran, Iran) - Family members of Ayatollah Rafsanjani, heads of the three branches of the Government, country's civil and military officials as well as people from different walks of life participated at the ceremony underway at Imam Khomeini Mosque in downtown Tehran on Wednesday, January ۱۱.
Ayatollah Rafsanjani passed away on Sunday, January ۸, at the age of 82 due to a heart attack at a Tehran hospital.
On Tuesday morning, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khamenei performed the funeral ‘prayer for the deceased’ (Salat al-Mayyit) at the University of Tehran.
The body of former Iranian president Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was laid to rest in the mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Imam Khomeini in southern Tehran on Tuesday after a funeral attended by top officials and a big crowd of people.
A funeral procession was held in the streets of Tehran afterwards, culminating in a burial ceremony at the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini, south of Tehran. Ayatollah Rafsanjani was buried beside Imam Khomeini’s grave.
Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, was an influential Iranian politician and writer, who was the fourth president of Iran.
Ayatollah Rafsanjani was the head of the Assembly of Experts from 2007 until 2011. He was also the chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council of Iran.
During the Iran–Iraq War Ayatollah Rafsanjani was the de facto commander-in-chief of the Iranian military.
He was elected chairman of the Iranian parliament in 1980 and served until 1989. Ayatollah Rafsanjani also served as president of Iran from 1989 to 1997.
